Since we first opened the doors and rolled out the awning in November 1999, David Brown’s Delicatessen has become a fine food magnet for the people of Whitstable and its visitors. Situated on Harbour Street, at the heart of the town’s conservation area, in an old butchers shop, “The Deli” as it affectionately known by locals, has built a reputation for personal service and quality supplies.

Owner David Brown is dedicated to unearthing the best produce for his customers, whether it’s from Spain, Italy or the local farm. It was while cooking in the Mediterranean, aboard the yachts of wealthy tycoons, that David’s love for and knowledge of specialist, regional ingredients started and he’s been putting it to good use ever since.

Along with expertly sourcing ingredients, years spent working as a chef means Dave knows how to cook them too – delicious breads and pastries are piled high on the marble counter and the window is bursting with colour thanks to wonderful salads and cold dishes he creates in the little kitchen, at the back of the shop.

Enamel Italian signs, vintage fridges and scales, a rustic butcher’s block and the much-loved boar’s head, all collected gradually, give The Shop a unique and authentic character.

Over the last 12 years The Deli has evolved, widening its reach beyond The Shop to offer outside catering, take away dishes, gift hampers and great coffee. This continued growth has allowed David to take on sister Alison and friend Vivien who help him to maintain The Deli’s reputation for excellence.

Whitstable’s popularity has also grown in the last decade and The Deli is now one of the many independent shops that make Harbour Street such a unique shopping destination, drawing visitors from far and wide.

Having recently acquired the lease for the shop next door, David is busy planning for expansion and the next chapter for David Brown Delicatessen.
